About Earlscliffe
Earlscliffe is a private house and garden in Howth, Co. Dublin, Ireland.
The house was built around 1845 and has been owned and lived in by people from a variety of professions, religious traditions and political outlooks.
Over the past 180 years, the house and its residents have lived through a changing Ireland, including the Great Famine, more accurately described by many as the Great Hunger, the Dublin Lockout, the Easter Rising, the Civil War, the First and Second World Wars, and the establishment and growth of the Irish Republic.
About this website
Earlscliffe has had a presence on the internet since 1997, at a time when the World Wide Web was still new to most people and when many businesses, private houses and gardens had no online presence at all.
What began as an online record of tender plants flourishing at 53.3°N has become part of the story itself: a growing archive of the house, garden, local history and Howth landscape. Over almost three decades, the website has followed the garden, the house, its setting in Howth, and the many stories connected with Earlscliffe.
